The Santo Tomas Church(1540) was built on the site of a sacred Mayan alter. Chichi has its own blend of pre-Columbian and Catholic rituals. This accepts unconventional pagan styles of worship. It is believed that the indigenous people began worshipping here when Father Francisco Ximenez(1701-03) started reading their holy book Popul Vuh. The Popul Vuh is an epic rich in Mayan Quiche mythology, cosmology, and conceptual worlds that tells the story of the creation of humankind.
