Mariachi is originally from the state of Jalisco. Its roots developed centuries ago from the typical Spanish theatrical orchestra. As Christianity spreads in Mexico, so did the use of violins, harps, brass horns, woodwinds, and guitars. Prior to Cortes, indigenous music was largely rattles, reed and clay flutes, drums, and conch horns. The word Mariachi probably is rooted in the now extinct language in central Jalisco called Cocar.
