This woman is a hatmaker on the western side of Lake Atitlan. She is from the village Santiago, Atitlan. The village assumed a unique role, when it became the first in the country to successfully expel the armed force. Relations between the army and the village had been strained since the early 1980s, when the army, wary of the presence of ORPA guerrillas in the area, established a permanent base in Santiago. The army accused the villagers of supporting the insurgents and attempted to terrorize the population into subservience. Throughout the 1980s, villagers were abducted, tortured and murdered-around three hundred were killed over an eleven-year period.
