In certain Mayan villages, the men wear dresses. This man is from the village of Solala. He is carrying his entire life's belongings with him. Lake Atitlan is ringed by three majestic volcanoes and its shorelines are populated by thirteen traditional indigenous villages. The villages are mostly subsistence farming communities, and it's easy to hike and boat around the lake staying in a different one each night. The lakeside area had been heavily populated since the earliest of times, but it's only relatively recently that it has attracted large numbers of tourists. For years few people stayed outside Panajachel, but hotels, guest houses, and tourism facilities have recently spread to most villages.
