Hernando Cortes toppled the Tarascan Empire in 1522. They put up little resistance. The Spanish government appointed Don Vasco de Quiroga to govern the Tarascan villages. It was his idea to have each village produce a specialized arts and crafts. This specialization still exists today. Santa Clara de Cobre still produces some amazing copper decorative items. Tzinintzuntzan, the former Tarascan capital specializes in creamy white pottery. One of my personal favorites is Tocuaro which is famous for its hand carved harvest masks. Still others might enjoy the town of Erongaricuro and its hand made fine furniture.
