This shaman is very respected for her curing powers. She is holding a plate filled with bird claws, herbs, and various animal parts(hearts and livers). Training to become a shaman can last from six to seven years. Shamans have the ability to foretell coming events, as well as the causes of diseases.

Ancient Mayans used shamans or priests when illness occurred. They would prescribe a variety of treatments including medicinal herbs, plants, rituals, divinations, and mineral substances. They used these along with worms, bat wings, urine, blood, and various crocodile body parts. Death was greatly feared by the Mayans. However, they did believe in life after death in eternal paradise, as well as Mitnal which was a type of eternal hell.
